Au Pairs are considered residents of New Hampshire!
You have 60 days to get a new driver’s license.
If you are a J1 Visa Holder you must apply for your license at the DMV office in Concord. You must apply for your first New Hampshire driver’s license at the DMV office in Concord.
On the day you visit the DMV office for your license, you will have to complete the application, take the eye and written exams, and finish with the road test. The written test is excused for drivers who are giving up a license from another state. The road test may also be skipped for drivers who have already had a license in another state; however, the licensing officer can require a road test if he or she feels it is in the best interest of public safety.
The New Hampshire Driver License Application Form is very easy to fill out. The operator license is $50. For your convenience, the state of New Hampshire accepts cash, check, or credit card.
Documents to Bring with you to Motor Vehicles:
• Your International Drivers License
• DS2019 Form
• Visa
• Host Family Letter
• Social Security Card
• Any drivers License issued from another state.
Eye Exam
In the state of New Hampshire the vision requirement is 20/40 with both eyes. The eye exam is issued only once. Bring Eye Glasses.
Preparing for the Written Test
You must read the Driver’s Manual. It is a 139-page document and covers everything you will be tested. Included is a 100-question practice test. If you score 85% or better on the practice test you shouldn’t have any trouble with the actual written exam. The actual written test is 20 multiple-choice fact questions. If you can’t read well enough to take the test, the test will be read to you.
If You Fail the Test
If you fail the written test, you can wait 24 hours then take it again. Be sure to study the portions of the test you got wrong. You will have to have a new eye exam each time you return to take the written test.
Road Test
When the time comes for the road test, the licensing officer will ride with you in your vehicle. An appointment is not required so you can plan on taking the road test as soon as you pass the written test, time permitting.
The road test takes about 15 to 20 minutes and should cover two to three miles of road
You must, by law, carry your license with you anytime you are operating a motor vehicle. If your license is lost, misplaced or destroyed you’ll want to apply for a duplicate.
After you pass the vision, knowledge, and skills test you will be given a 45-day temporary license. Your Permanent license will arrive in the mail within 45 days
